Perhaps a little implausible, impossible even, the Christmas story is also incredibly and astonishingly true. Whispers of grace make the mightiest empires give way. Love is real and that love keeps changing hearts and lives. This is why all over the world we keep on singing songs of adoration to the One who came, born in the dust and dirt of humble, human circumstances to show us what God is really like.

The Christmas season is what we in recent centuries have culturally made of this Christmas story. A time of year packed with experiences and expectations that are festive, fun and yet disorienting and difficult for people who are missing loved ones. The yearly traditions that help us remember the Christ and make Christmas meaningful can also make the season hard if the people who helped bring the holidays to life are gone. How do we carry on the celebrations in their absence? We do our best, but with each gathering of friends and family we realize that grief is the price we pay for love. This is part of Christmas too. That’s why I wrote and included ‘Saddest Season’ on this album. I dedicate this recording to all of you who struggle with the season. Sandra says, “I’ve always loved Christmas music, but making a Christmas album always felt a bit out of reach for me since my favorite Christmas albums are so timeless and the carols are so universal. I’ve been thinking about it for a few years; especially since my trip to Israel a couple summers ago, where I visited the birthplace of Jesus and the shepherd’s field near Bethany. Once we finally got the songs together, I decided I didn’t need to overthink it. I wanted to enjoy the process… to sing the sacred story of Jesus’ birth.”

Sandra continues, “As people listen to this record, I want them to feel invited into the room with us, like they were present when we recorded it, and moreover that this sonic welcome would be a deeper experience of knowing and believing that we are all invited into the story of Jesus’ birth. We still need the light of Jesus to break into our darkness in our lives. Sometimes we need familiar melodies to remind us that we have a place where we belong… that in the broken places, in the waiting, in the hoping, we are not alone! In 2005, we released this Christmas song as a single resource on an enhanced CD. It is a modern worship song styling of the ancient Christmas message of Jesus coming to earth from the celebration story of the gospel accounts. We recorded and produced an entire suite of resources for this modern worship song because we thought it would be best to equip churches by providing the most extensive musical resources. This meant, simply, that if someone was looking for a modern sounding worship song, that fit the Christmas theme, they could use this song with their local church music group, regardless of the musician and vocal resources they had available. If they had a choir and complete band, they could use this resource easily. If they had a small group with just one leader, all the components were here to help, regardless.

If you are like me, every time the Christmas season rolls around I am on the look out for fresh Christmas worship songs. It’s always nice to breathe some new life into our Christmas season song lists with fresh, new Christmas worship songs. “I Will Remember” is congregationally-friendly with a strong, memorable chorus (no pun intended). I’m sure “I Will Remember” will find a home in many churches this Christmas season…
…It is obvious that much consideration has gone into pulling together the component pieces of the “I Will Remember”. This is truly a worship leader’s resource created by a worship leader for worship leaders. Hopefully not the last of its kind!!
